English: Barbados lily, orange lily

Habit:  herb

Description:  "Perennial herb; bulbs with short neck.  Leaves strap-shaped, to 12 x 1 inches, bright green, blunt-tipped.  Inflorescence a 2-4-flowered umbel, scape to 12 inches tall, hollow; bracts 1.25-2.5 inches long.  Flowers horizontal or drooping, funnel-shaped, 3-4.5 inches long; corolla tube greenish, lobes bright orange, red, or scarlet, with greenish keel halfway along lobe; stamens included, filaments without scales where attached to tepals (bristles sometimes present); style ca. as long as corolla, stigma 3-forked"  (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 689).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "commonly cultivated and naturalized along irrigation ditches, in pastures, and other disturbed sites, 80-300 m" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1463).

Propagation:  "Its dispersal mechanism is perplexing, as seeds have not yet been observed [in Hawaii], but the underground onion-like bulbs produce smaller bulblets that could be moved around with soil and yard waste"  (Oppenheimer, 2008; p. 29).

Native range:  Southern and central Brazil, widely cultivated elsewhere  (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 689).
